There are always a number of significant University
construction projects going on around campus, some of which are being built near or adjacent to residence halls or the Northwood apartments.
Sometimes these projects
can cause a disruption or result in some inconvenience to the daily
routine of residence hall and Northwood Community residents. University Housing staff provide residents
affected by nearby construction with regular updates about scheduled work that may involve noise or other disruptions. Use the
information provided here to learn about construction projects taking
place near a University Housing facility:
- Pedestrian Safety
What students should do to maximize their safety and diminish the prospects of an accident:
- Please use the posted crosswalks, follow the signed pathways, and stay out of fenced construction sites.
- Never—day or night—walk in the street along construction fencing.
- Pedestrians have the right-of-way once they’ve entered a crosswalk, but should always pay attention to oncoming traffic.
- Pedestrians and bicyclists often share the sidewalk in construction zones where streets are narrowed or obstructed.
- Pay attention to surroundings, especially when talking on a cell phone or wearing earphones.
- Use the pedestrian bridge across Washtenaw connecting the Life Sciences complex with Couzens and Palmer Field, as well as the pedestrian bridge by CCRB.
- Report unsafe conditions (street lights out; signage vandalized; etc.) to DPS at 3-1131.

Palmer Field reclamation
With construction activities completed for the new Hill Dining Center and the renovation of Mosher-Jordan Hall, Palmer Field has been reclaimed and regraded, and will remain closed during Summer 2008 to give new grass time to fully establish prior to the August move in.
Please Do Not Disturb
With all of the construction on campus, University Housing is mindful that attendant noise, dust, exhaust and traffic can be disruptive to our residents. Working with contractors, we make an effort to establish measures to mitigate the impact of construction:
- Noise will be kept to a minimum before 8 a.m., although deliveries, materials staging and conversation between workers may occur beginning at 7 a.m.
- Trucks should not be left idling.
- On-site diesel equipment will use fuel supplement and emission scrubbers to reduce odors.
- Dust control measures will be enforced during site work.
- Personal vehicles of workforce will be parked off-site.
- Contractors will wear photo ID badges at all times while on site.
- Every effort is made to minimize construction work during official study/exam days.
