Estimating
Your Room and Board Rates for 2008- 09
Residence hall room and board rates are approved at the University
of Michigan Board of Regents' meeting in March or April of each year
and
made available on the housing web site after the meeting. To assist you
with your planning, we provide "not to exceed"
rates for each room type before you are required to sign a contract.
Actual rates are not anticipated to be greater than the "not to
exceed" rates. More information about the Room
and Board Rate-Setting Process is
available below.

Meal
Plan Options for Returning Students
In conjunction with the opening of the new Hill Dining Center
next fall, we will be offering new meal plans based on extensive input
collected from students through surveys and focus groups over the past
year. Details about the new meal plans will be provided before the end
of the term. Returning students will have the option of selecting from
any of the new meal plans or two of our most popular plans—the Any 9 or
the Any 13. Other existing meal plans—the Any 18 and 135 Plan—will be
discontinued. As in prior years, your contract will automatically include
the Any 13 meal plan and you will have the opportunity to change meal
plans during the first month of the Fall Term. For more information about
meal plans, please visit www.housing.umich.edu/dining/mealplan_roomboard.html
.
New Meal Plans Coming Soon!
For new and returning students, we expect to offer one or more block plans that will offer a set number of meals per term, as well as one or more new unlimited plans that allow students to eat in the residential dining rooms as often as they like. The features of these plans will be somewhat different from existing block and unlimited plans. We are now in the process of refining the new meal plans and expect to complete our review and provide more information in early March.
Room
and Board Rate-Setting Process
Residence hall rates for the next academic year are discussed
during the winter term by a student and staff rate-setting committee.
The
committee develops a recommended rate increase that is presented
to the Director of University Housing and the Office of the Provost
for review. University Housing, through the Office of the Vice
President for Student Affairs, ultimately proposes a rate schedule
for approval
and adoption by the Board of Regents. The Board of Regents has
the final authority in setting major University fees, including
room
and board. University Housing will publish a final rate schedule,
contingent on the Board of Regents' approval, as soon as it is
available
after the Regents' meeting. Approved rates will also be published
on the University Housing web site.
University Housing is a self-sustaining auxiliary unit of the University
and is required to generate sufficient revenue for both operational
and capital improvement expenditures. It receives no General Fund
or State of Michigan allocations. University Housing makes every
effort to operate its facilities in a cost-effective manner and
to keep any annual rate increase to the lowest possible amount so
that room and board remains accessible to U-M students.
