Josh Peipcock, HD of East QuadThe University of Michigan is an amazing place to work.  Many institutions talk much about a commitment to multiculturalism and social justice, but I feel that Michigan truly acts on that promise.  Our student residence staff class is centered on helping future paraprofessional staff members to learn about their own social identities, then to strive to build effective multicultural communities.

My professional colleagues bring a multitude of experiences and passions to the department.  Our varied interests create a rich and exciting work environment.  Our students are driven and unique as well.  They are highly focused on academics, and they bring varied experiences and interests to our work.  No day is ever the same and I am regularly impressed with our students.

Both Housing and the Division of Student Affairs provide many opportunities for professional development.  I have served on and chaired various committees within Residence Education, facilitated Leadershape through Student Activities and Leadership, and serve as an ALLY facilitator for the LGBTA office.  The size of Michigan provides numerous resources for both staff and students

“When I was offered a position at the University of Michigan I had no idea the kind of experiences that I would be exposed to. This place is like no other with our commitment to social justice and creating a safe place for students to explore their own identities. UofM is an institution that actually practices what they preach.

Coming from a much smaller housing department, I was immediately intimidated by the size of UofM Housing. Within no time at all I realized that this department is very inviting and offers several degrees of support. I encourage you to check out what the University of Michigan Residence Education has to offer!”

The Residence Education department at the University of Michigan gives you plenty of autonomy to explore your professional and personal interests. That’s one of the best things about working here: I have freedom to pursue new ideas professionally, and I am trusted to do my work competently. Additionally, because most student affairs practitioners are drawn to this work because of their commitment to college students, I have to brag on our students a bit. Our students are a joy to work with! The Michigan student is driven, down to earth, intelligent, and a natural leader. Michigan offers incredible Big Ten campus excitement with amazing academics and research. It is truly a dynamic place to be!
