Telephone Service Quick Guide
For undergraduate students living in University Housingphone service logo

Information Technology Communications (ITCom) provides telephone service in University Housing residence halls and Northwood III apartments. University Housing and ITCom have gathered this information to provide answers to the most frequently asked questions about telephone lines, equipment and features in residence hall rooms and undergraduate apartments.

Standard equipment per residence hall room

  • One touch-tone wall unit telephone*
  • One telephone line (opt in voicemail via ITcom for $3.90/mo)
  • One wall outlet (located just below the telephone) with two or three jacks.
  • One jack provides access to the same telephone line listed above; it can be used to connect a second telephone (cord or cordless), modem, fax machine or answering machine.
  • One or two jacks provide access to the Ethernet network for data transmission to/from a computer.**

* Mosher-Jordan rooms do not have phones. Students wishing to utilize the telephone line are encouraged to bring their own.

**Note: The Residence Halls Computing Program (ResComp), not ITCom, provides data connectivity in residence hall rooms. Residents receive a Networking Guide at Move-In. See www.rescomp.umich.edu for details.

Standard equipment per Northwood III apartment

  • One touch-tone desk unit telephone
  • One telephone line including voicemail via ITcom
  • One DSL device (located near the telephone) for data transmission to/from a computer. Note: Residents will receive a DSL Networking guide at Move-In. See www.itcom.itcs.umich.edu/housing for more information.

Basic telephone service features:

Authorization code
Each resident is given a personal authorization code (authcode) for charging long distance calls. Charges are billed to your University Statement of Account (Student Account). The use of each authcode is limited to the telephones in residence hall rooms and Northwood apartments. DO NOT share your authcode or leave it written where others can see it.

Your authcode is available to you online in late August for the upcoming academic year. Go to www.itcom.itcs.umich.edu/telephone/students.html. Click on UMphone Student Services and log in with your uniqname and UMICH password.

Direct dialed long distance service
With your authcode, you can make direct dialed long distance calls (both domestic and international) from a residence hall room or Northwood III apartment telephone at anytime.

Direct-to-your-room or direct-to-your-apartment dial-in service
Friends and family can dial you directly at your room or apartment phone number.

Local calling areas
Local calls are free and unlimited. The local calling area includes Ann Arbor, Chelsea, Dexter, Manchester, Milan, Plymouth, Saline, South Lyon, Whitmore Lake and Ypsilanti.

Call waiting
Call waiting alerts you to incoming calls while you are on the phone. To learn how to use or turn off this feature, you will find instructions at http://www.itcom.itcs.umich.edu/telephone/callwait.html.

Caller ID
Caller ID is available at no charge if you attach your own ID device (telephone or box).

Billing
Telephone usage charges are included on your monthly University Statement of Account (Student Account) as a separate line item. A detailed listing of your telephone usage charges is available to you online. Go to http://www.itcom.itcs.umich.edu/telephone/billing/students.html for general billing information. For your personal billing information, click on UMphone Student Services and log in with your uniquename and UMICH password.

For inquiries or concerns about telephone charges, contact the ITCom Customer Service Center at 763-2000.

Payment
Payment is due at the time you receive your monthly University Statement of Account (Student Account). When you pay the total amount listed on your statement, you are paying your telephone bill.

Using another carrier’s service
Direct-dialed calls using another carrier’s service (such as MCI, Sprint or AT&T) can be made from your room or apartment telephone only if you already have an account with the carrier, or have a prepaid calling card. Rates are determined by the carrier and agreed to by the subscriber. You cannot change your in-room or in-apartment service to another carrier.

Calling cards
Dial the carrier’s toll free number (see calling instructions) and follow the voice prompts.

Billing of non-University services
Any services not provided by ITCom, such as for calling cards, pagers, cell phones and Web services, CANNOT BE BILLED TO A UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN TELEPHONE NUMBER. If such charges are identified, University telephone services for the account in question will be canceled immediately.

Telephone repair
Call 647-8888 for repairs to University telephone lines or equipment. DO NOT CALL FIX-IT for telephone repairs, as you would for other resident room or apartment repairs. ITCom repairs or replaces University lines, jacks and equipment at no cost, unless the repair is determined to be the fault of the resident(s). Residents will be charged in full for repairs that result from misuse, abuse or vandalism. ITCom does not repair equipment not provided by the University, including equipment owned or leased by a resident.

Student directory
Student telephone numbers can be looked up in the online directory via Housing’s Web site, www.housing.umich.edu. Under the search field, click on people and enter the name. You can request that your number not be published in any directory by contacting the Registrar’s Office.

Telemarketing calls
ITCom will never sell or provide lists of student numbers to any group. Furthermore, you can limit telemarketing calls to your room or apartment telephone by registering with the National Do Not Call Registry at www.donotcall.gov.
