multicultural and diversity programs: Multicultural Councils

Multicultural CouncilsResidence hall multicultural councils are recognized student organizations within the University. As organizations, the multicultural councils plan community service projects and cultural and social events for residence hall students. The mission of the multicultural organizations is to provide social and political support for African American, Hispanic/Latino, Asian, and Native American residents of University residence halls. Membership is open to all residents who are interested in learning about and supporting the concerns of these groups. Programs are designed to educate residents on topics that are pertinent to African American, Hispanic/Latino, Asian and Native American students living in the residence halls. All multicultural councils are advised by the Minority Peer Advising staff of each building. For membership or further information, please contact the Minority Peer Advisor or Assistant in the residence hall. Fletcher Hall residents may affiliate with a building/council of their choice.

There is no cumulative formal history on the creation of the minority/multicultural hall councils. However, we do know that several of the councils were started in response to the lack of inclusiveness of residence hall councils to the concerns of residents of color. During the late 1980's and early 1990's many of the council bodies voted to adapt their names to include the term "multicultural" and drop the words "black" or "minority" from their official names. Today each of the residence halls has a multicultural council along with the residence hall council. -Top-
