University Housing Parking Policies

General Policies Regarding University Housing Parking Permits
The following general policies apply to residents participating in University Housing permit lotteries who are ultimately issued a permit for a University Housing-operated lot:

  • Residents may only enter the lottery once and will receive a maximum of one parking permit for one vehicle. No resident is eligible for multiple parking permits.

  • Residents who submit any false information as part of participation in a parking lottery or in the submission of a parking permit application will be subject to removal from the lottery and/or revocation of the permit.

  • Residents who submit incomplete entries into the parking lottery will have their entry automatically disqualified from consideration.

  • Residents are not permitted to enter the lottery for purposes of acquiring a permit for anyone other than themselves.

  • Alteration, modification, duplication, or transference of parking permits is prohibited and may result in criminal penalties and revocation of permits.

  • Lost or stolen permits may only be replaced at the location where the permit was originally issued, and will require the submission of a Department of Public Safety report regarding the loss or theft of the parking permit. Residents replacing a lost or stolen permit are required to pay a $20.00 replacement fee.

  • Transferring a permit from one vehicle to another requires issuing a new permit, as each permit is issued to a specific resident and vehicle. Residents transferring a permit in this manner are required to pay a $20.00 replacement fee.

  • Individuals entering the University Housing parking lottery are entering a binding agreement that they intend to purchase a parking permit from University Housing; any returns or reimbursements of sold parking permits will be granted solely at the discretion of University Housing.

Parking Regulations for University Housing Surface Lots

  • University Housing surface parking lots are for use by permit holders only for the duration of their current academic year Housing contract. Parking is allowed in designated spaces only. Vehicles must be maintained in good working order while parked in a University Housing lot. The Department of Public Safety patrols all University Housing parking areas and may ticket any vehicle that appears to be abandoned.

  • University ordinance indicates that vehicles should not remain in the same parking spot for more than 48 hours. Any vehicle that has not been moved in over 48 hours is subject to ticketing and may be impounded as abandoned.

  • All permits must be attached to the interior lower left (driver) side of the front windshield and be in plain view at all times.

  • The Department of Public Safety is responsible for enforcement of the University ordinance dealing with on-campus parking. Parking or driving vehicles off roadways, on sidewalks, or grass is strictly prohibited. Violators are subject to vehicle impoundment and will be held responsible for any damages incurred.

  • All vehicles must be currently registered according to appropriate State law and properly display licenses and license tabs. In addition, residents are required by State law to maintain insurance coverage on any vehicle parking in University Housing parking lots. The University and University Housing assume no liability for theft, damage, or other loss to a vehicle parking in University-owned and operated parking lots.

Violations of Parking Policies
Residents violating any of the above stated policies or any other policies outlined in the Community Living at Michigan handbook may face penalties included, but not limited to: removal from the parking lottery, loss of parking privileges without reimbursement, other penalties as outlined in the Community Living at Michigan handbook, and/or criminal penalties where applicable.
