undergraduate housing: Parking for Residence Hall Residents

Parking for Residence Hall Students
Parking for students on or near the Ann Arbor campus is very limited, including in the areas near the residence halls. There is no adjacent permit parking available for residents living in Barbour/Newberry, Couzens, East Quad, Alice Lloyd, Markley, Mosher-Jordan, South Quad, Stockwell, or West Quad. University Housing does maintain parking lots adjacent to Baits, Bursley, Fletcher and Oxford Halls and students living in those residence halls have first priority to apply for a parking permit specific to the lot adjacent to their assigned building. In the event of extra spaces being available, opportunities for parking may be extended to other students living within the residence halls. In cases where University Housing provides parking permits for surface lots nearby to residence halls, there are no guarantees that even in those locations there will be enough available spaces to meet the demand for any specific academic year.

State law requires registration and insurance coverage on any automobile parked in a residence hall parking lot, including those with a University-issued parking permit.

University Housing parking lots are not part of the UM Parking and Transportation Services system and require a separate permit. More information can be found on their website regarding parking and transportation options for UM students on the Ann Arbor campus

Both first-year and returning students living within the residence halls will be able to apply online to enter the parking lottery for their respective residence hall. The parking lottery is specific to each residence hall that offers parking spaces and is initially only open to residents of that building. Both returning and first-year students must enter their respective residence hall parking lottery to be eligible for parking spaces, and a lottery drawing will determine the order that permits will be offered to individuals who apply for parking. Residents who do not receive a parking permit offer in their own residence hall may be offered a parking permit from another residence hall on a space-available basis.

If there are remaining parking spaces available at the Baits or Bursley parking lots at the conclusion of the lottery drawings, applications for available spaces will be accepted from students in the following priority order:

  • Residents of Baits, Bursley, Oxford , and Fletcher who did not receive a permit for the parking lot closest to their building
  • Any UM residence hall student

Permit cost and duration information can be found on the Residence Hall Parking Permit Application page.
