Barbour Temporary Housing (International Early Arrival)
Barbour Temporary Housing, which runs from Tuesday, July 29th and ends at noon on Thursday, August 21st, is designed to accommodate your housing needs prior to the start of the academic year. . It is located at Betsey Barbour Residence Hallon Central Campus at the University of Michigan.

Eligibility
This housing is intended for students who have a signed residence hall contract or are matriculated for the upcoming fall term, and arrive in Ann Arbor before their available contract move-in date. Guests of students are not permitted.

Check-in
The Temporary Housing Program at Betsey Barbour Residence Hall does not take advance reservations. When you arrive in Ann Arbor, visit Barbour or call the Front Desk (734) 764-1162 to see if there are rooms available. You may dial 4-1162 from the red building phone at each entrance. Please note that the Barbour Front Desk is open from 9:00 a.m. until 9:00 p.m, each day. Barbour is located at 420 South State Street in Ann Arbor. Please view the map of Central Campus for directions.

Rates and Payment
The per diem rate for a single is $36.00 plus tax (includes bed with linen). The per diem rate for a double is $27.50 per person plus tax (includes two beds with linen.) There is a 2 night minimum stay. Residents must check out by 11:00 AM to not be billed for another night. Payment is billed directly to your University of Michigan Student Account.

Check-out
Check-out if by 11:00 AM. Renewals to stay over additional days must be made by 11:00 AM. Residents who do not renew will be presumed to be leaving and their personal belongings removed to storage. Additional charges will be assessed to cover the cost of such storage.

Residence Hall Contracts
Residents with 2008-09 residence hall contracts will be permitted to move into their fall term room on Thursday, August 21, beginning at 8:00 AM. There will be a early move-in daily charge from August 21 until the official start day of your contract. You must notify us as soon as possible if you will be moving directly from Barbour into your fall term residence hall room. Programming and services in these halls are greatly limited before the actual starting date on your contract.

End of Program
All guests must leave Betsey Barbour by 12:00 noon on Thursday, August 21. NO EXCEPTIONS!

Barbour Temporary Housing Details
Each resident is asked to become familiar with the information on this page and to cooperate with each other and the Barbour Residence Hall staff. We want each resident’s stay with us to be as pleasant and comfortable as possible.

Rooms
All rooms are supplied with single beds or bunk beds. In double rooms the first occupant in the room claims whichever bed he/she wishes and the second occupant must take the other or negotiate a trade with the first occupant. The furniture should not be re-arranged.

Conduct
Excessive noise and other conduct which disrupts study, sleep and “quiet hours” (as noted below), or other excessively loud activities, are prohibited in Barbour. During quiet hours, Barbour should be free from interfering noises. Electronic sound equipment, musical instruments, and room activities should not be heard outside the room. Quiet hours are: Sunday – Saturday: 11 PM – 7 AM

Courtesy hours are in effect 24 hours a day. Residents are expected to occupy all parts of Betsey Barbour in a quiet, peaceful and lawful manner. Smoking is not permitted anywhere in Barbour. Alcoholic beverages and illegal drugs are not permitted in Barbour Residence Hall. If a Housing staff member is aware of a violation concerning alcohol, drugs, or smoking in Barbour, it will be reported to University Housing Security and the violator will be immediately and permanently evicted from the premises.

Bathrooms
There are single-sex community bathroom facilities located on each floor. They are identified as for men or for women only.

Laundry
Coin-operated laundry facilities are located in the basement.

Telephone Service
Each room is equipped with a phone that can be used for local calls and to place collect calls. For on campus and local calls dial the 7-digit number. You can dial toll-free 800 numbers (for long distance calling cards) on the phone in the hallway to the left of the front desk. Telephone messages for residents that come through the front desk telephone will be posted on the bulletin board across from the front desk only. Be certain to check the board often for your messages.

Mail
Residents are welcome to receive mail, although it is essential that a change of address card be completed when residents move out so that mail can be forwarded. The address for receiving mail is:

Please remember that this is your temporary address only, so it should not be provided to anyone who needs to be able to reach you in the fall, such as your academic department or bank.

Food
Meal service and kitchen facilities are not available. There is a small grocery store on William Street (one block north of Barbour), and there are a number of restaurants nearby. There are snack machines in the basement.

Security
University Housing maintains its own security staff which patrols and monitors Betsey Barbour. Staff are available 24 hours a day to handle emergencies and complaints, and investigate problem incidents. IN A FIRE, POLICE OR MEDICAL EMERGENCY DIAL 911. Call 763-1131 for all other security assistance. You should always lock your room when you leave it, no matter how short a time you will be gone. Report any suspicious individual or activity to Housing Security.

Prohibited items
The following items are prohibited in Barbour: cooking appliances such as hotplates, toaster ovens, toasters, electric woks, grills and rice cookers; firearms and other weapons; fireworks and other explosives; oil lamps; candles and incense.

Fire
In the event of a fire or the fire alarm sounding – a series of piercing alarm sounds, accompanied by strobe lights flashing in the public areas – you should exit the building by the closest safe exit immediately (do not use the elevator). Outside, assemble across Marynard Street (west side of Barbour). Read fire-related instructions posted on the inside of your room door.

Tornadoes
A 3-5 minute steady tone on an Ann Arbor warning siren indicates that a tornado has been sighted. Seek shelter inside the building by moving to an interior corridor on one of the lowest floors and stay away from any areas of glass. Do not remain on the upper floors of the building. If you are outside and there is no time to escape, lie flat in the nearest depression in the landscape.

Housekeeping Services
In order to minimize costs only modified housekeeping services are provided. A clean linen packet (consisting of bed linens, towel, and wash cloth) is in the room for each resident when they arrive. Beds are furnished with blankets and pillows. When residents check out, they should remove bed linens and towels, place them in the plastic bag, and return them to the front desk. Bathrooms are cleaned by Housekeeping staff daily, Monday – Friday. Trash receptacles are located in the closet on each hallway and residents are asked to use them to empty their own wastebaskets. Housekeeping staff will lend cleaning supplies and equipment to residents who wish to clean their rooms during their stay.
