Temporary Overflow Spaces

Can't see an image above? Learn about enabling Java. All freshmen are guaranteed an on-campus housing space regardless of when they apply. While University Housing makes every attempt to place eligible students in a standard residence hall room prior to the start of the term, we are sometimes faced with the need to provide housing for more students than we have spaces available. When there is such a demand, some students who were later applicants are assigned to temporary housing spaces located in various residence halls across campus or in rooms at an on-campus guest housing facility. Assignment to temporary housing is generally for a very limited time frame; students are reassigned to a permanent room as soon as they become available during the Fall Term. Students in temporary spaces have the highest priority for spaces that open up after move-in is completed. At the time a permanent space is offered, University Housing provides moving assistance at no cost to the resident. Temporary spaces are typically located in residence hall lounges that have been outfitted with all the amenities of a traditional residence hall room, although they are generally larger. 3-4 students are assigned to each temporary location and only those students will have access to the room while it is used for this purpose. Each student will have his or her own bed, desk, chest of drawers, and wardrobe or clothing hanging space. Rooms have a telephone and ethernet data connectivity, hard-wired smoke detector, draperies, and overhead lighting. The actual room may not match the virtual tour shown above. The Michigan Daily provided
a student's perspective of these temporary spaces in an article
published in September 2001..
