Recycling Center

Ann Arbor takes pride in being a very "green" town. The University of Michigan and the city of Ann Arbor are leading examples in the recycling effort. Separate receptacles to deposit waste, paper, and containers are not hard to find. They're on the street corner outside your classroom and in your residence hall.

  Clean Up - Title Text

During last year's Move-In, 2337 cubic yards of cardboard, 502 large bags of polystyrene foam block and 40 large bags of foam pellets were collected for recycling. That's a lot of reusable material saved from going to a landfill!

University Housing strongly supports the nationally recognized recycling programs at UM, and at Move-In, you'll be able to do your part. You can recycle unwanted cardboard, polyfoam and other packing materials easily by putting them in the appropriately labeled dumpsters and carts near residence hall loading docks, and other locations. You can also recycle most papers and container types. Just look for large, signs that will show you what goes where. Anything that doesn't fit one of the categories can go in the dumpsters labeled TRASH.

After Move-In, continue recycling all year by using the designated bins for "Paper" and "Containers" in the recycling/waste collection station in your living area. Batteries should be taken to the Community Center or other designated area for disposal in the containers provided. Sharps (needles, syringes and lancets) must be placed in sharps disposal envelopes, available at the Community Center or through your RA, and disposed of per instructions from them or available online . For more information about Sharps disposal in University Housing, see the SHARPS program page.

Recycling and sustainability are related. You can learn more about sustainability efforts in University Housing online.
