Application and Room Assignment Overview
All University Housing business and notifications are communicated thorugh your University of Michigan email account.
We know that many incoming students have older friends, siblings or other
relatives who have lived in a UM residence hall. It’s great to get
advice from them, but policies, the composition of halls, and procedures
have changed over the years. Be sure you are deciding your preferences
based on current information.
You have our assurance that we will do our best to meet your stated preferences,
but we are unable to guarantee placement to a specific campus location,
hall or room type. There are several key reasons why it may not be possible
to offer you an assignment that matches your top preferences. As is the
case at most campuses across the country, returning students have first
choice of spaces and halls, so most singles and many doubles are taken
by these students during the reapplication process. The number and size
of residential Michigan Learning Community programs, room environment
options and room gender designations are other factors that make room
assignment a complex process. Please read the items below so you understand
how University Housing makes its decisions regarding room assignments.
• All newly admitted freshmen who follow all application procedures
and deadlines will receive on-campus housing.
• If the completed application is not received within 30 days of
the date of issue, the student will lose any priority for on-campus housing
until all other applicants have been assigned, vacancies permitting.
• All documentation related to a disability, a chronic health condition
or religious observance must be provided according to the procedures and
timeframe described on this Web site.
• University Housing does not make room assignments and will not
consider room changes based on race, ethnicity, religion, disability,
sexual orientation, national origin or in-state/out-of-state residency
status.
• We are not able to take into consideration factors that are
not part of the standard application, such as your academic unit, location
of on- or off-campus employment, participation in a club sport, or family
alumni status. You may, however, consider such factors in indicating your
preferences on your application.
• Freshmen are not guaranteed an assignment to a room with other
freshmen. It is possible that a freshman may be assigned to a room with
upperclass students.
• Once an assignment has been made, it cannot be changed even if
the contract has not been signed. If you refuse an assignment, University
Housing will not offer you another assignment until the first day of classes,
vacancies permitting. You are not legally bound to a room assignment
until you sign a contract. Submitting an application is not
a contractual commitment.
• Spring/Summer Term assignments are made on a first-come, first-served
basis.
• The Fall Term application and assignment process follows a specific
timeline, which is outlined below.
May 7
Deadline to submit application for the first round of housing assignments.
All housing applications received by 11:59pm EDT are assigned a random
number to objectively determine the order in which housing assignments
are made. Having an application in this round does not guarantee that
you will receive your preferred room type or campus neighborhood. Applications
after May 7 are assigned on a first-come, first-served basis.
August 31
Entire Fall Term room and board payment is due.
