Adult Class Descriptions
All adult classes will be held in the Northwood Community Center, 1000 McIntyre Drive.
NOTE: The topics and materials in English for Everyday Life, Beginning Conversation, and Advanced Speaking/Listening are different in fall, winter, spring, and summer semesters.

Grammar Thru Conversation
Speak English more clearly and accurately! This beginning to intermediate
level course is for people who want to improve their spoken grammar. Class
participants will review grammar structures such as articles and adverbs.
More importantly, they will practice using these grammatical structures
correctly in speaking activities. The syllabus will include instruction
and speaking practice based on the particular grammar problems of the
students. NOTE: You can take this class even if you did not take
Grammar Thru Conversation in the fall semester.
Everyday
Conversation
Practice your conversation skills! Talk about topics and situations
that occur in your daily life. This beginning to intermediate level course
is for people who have learned some basic English vocabulary and grammar.
However, they still have difficulty understanding and speaking English
in daily tasks and social situations. Class participants will learn and
practice language and customs that can help them communicate in daily
life.
English
for Everyday Life
Learn practical English and explore Ann Arbor! This beginning to intermediate
level course is for people who have learned some basic English vocabulary
and grammar. However, they still have great difficulty understanding and
speaking English. They especially have problems conducting everyday
tasks in English, such as ordering in restaurants, going shopping, making
travel arrangements, etc. Participants in this class will receive instruction
and practice in performing daily tasks in English. They will also receive
some information on the Ann Arbor community and surrounding areas.
More Listening and
Speaking
Improve your listening comprehension and become more comfortable speaking!
This intermediate level course is for people who can speak and understand
English conversation about common topics. Class participants will practice
listening to spoken English and speak about topics related to listening
activities. NOTE: You can take this class even if you did not
take Grammar Thru Conversation in the fall semester.

Word Power
Learn and use new expressions in English! This is an intermediate
to advanced level course for learners who wish to increase their vocabulary.
Idiomatic expressions, various meanings of the same word, and word families
will be explored through speaking, listening, reading, and writing activities.
NOTE: You can take this class even if you did not take Grammar
Thru Conversation in the fall semester.
Advanced Speaking and Listening
Express your ideas more easily and clearly! This is an advanced level
class for learners who can converse easily about general topics but want
to further improve their listening comprehension and speaking abilities.
Various topics will be discussed and idioms, shades of meaning, and different
ways to say the same thing will be explored.
Important Dates
There will be no classes on
- The first day of
class. Instead of class, teachers will hold individual appointments
with adult students and with parents and children.
