**This materials fee includes an audiocassette tape and course pack. A textbook must be purchased for some of the other adult classes.

Adult Class Descriptions

All adult classes will be held in the Northwood Community Center, 1000 McIntyre Drive.
NOTE: The topics and materials in English for Everyday Life, Beginning Conversation, and Advanced Speaking/Listening are different in fall, winter, spring, and summer semesters.

Beginning Conversation
This beginning level course is for people who have learned some basic English vocabulary and gram-mar. However, they still have great difficulty understanding and speaking English in conversational and social situations. Class participants will learn about and practice language and customs that can help them feel more comfortable participating in conversational and social situations. Topics this semester will include invitations, food, and travel.

Conversational English
Would you like to improve your conversational skills, but you don’t have much time to practice? This beginning to intermediate level course is for people who have learned basic English. However, they still have difficulty participating in social and conversational situations in English. Class participants will receive instruction, practice and cultural information to help them feel more comfortable handling conversational and social situations here. Class topics will be chosen by class participants and the teacher.

English for Everyday Life
This beginning to intermediate level course is for people who have learned some basic English vocabulary and grammar. However, they still have great difficulty understanding and speaking English. They especially have problems conducting everyday tasks in English, such as going to the doctor, going shopping, answering the telephone, etc. Participants in this class will receive instruction and practice in performing daily tasks in English. They will also receive some information on the Ann Arbor community and surrounding areas.


Speaking and Pronunciation
Would you like to speak English more easily and more clearly? Do you want people to understand you better when you speak? This course will help you to practice speaking while improving your pronunciation. It is for beginning to intermediate level learners who have learned some basic English vocabulary and grammar.

Gramatically Speaking
This is an intermediate level class for people who wish to improve their spoken grammar. Students will have an opportunity to review some of the most troublesome grammar points of English. More importantly, they will practice using these grammatical structures correctly in speaking activities. The syllabus will include instruction and speaking practice based on the particular grammar problems of the students.

Advanced Speaking and Listening
This is an advanced level class for learners who can converse easily about general topics but want to further improve their listening comprehension and speaking abilities. Various topics will be discussed and idioms, shades of meaning, and different ways to say the same thing will be explored.

Important Dates
There will be no classes on

  • The first day of class. Instead of class, teachers will hold individual appointments with adult students and with parents and children. You will receive an appointment date and time when you register for a class. Classes that meet only one time per week will have appointments during the week before the semester begins and then have class for all students on the first day of class.
  • October 20-21 (University fall break)
  • November 26-28 (Thanksgiving break)
