Classroom Locations
All adult and most school-aged children's classes take place in the Northwood Community Center at 1000 McIntyre Drive, located at the corner of Hubbard and McIntyre, one block west of Huron Parkway. Preschool children's classes and the 4½-6 Year-Olds classes take place at 1588 Cram Circle, between Hubbard Road and Bishop Street, in Northwood I.

If you have disabilities and need special accommodations, please call the English Language teaching staff at #734-764-9998 at least five days before the semester begins.

Child Care
For those who are interested in enrolling in an English class but who also need to arrange for child care, these community resources may be helpful.

  • The University of Michigan Work/Life Resource Center staff help U-M families to locate child care. They can be contacted by email at worklife@umich.edu, or by calling #936-8677.
  • The Child Care Network (#975-1840) can help families who are not affiliated with U-M to find child care.

If your child is between 0-3 years old:

  • Contact the U-M Work/Life Resource Center, 2072 Administrative Services Building, Ann Arbor, Michigan 48109-1432, www.umich.edu/~hraa/worklife/childcare.shtml. PHONE: (734) 936-8677. FAX: (734) 936-8894. E-MAIL: worklife@umich.edu. They help U-M families find care for their children as well as for their elderly or disabled relatives. If your family is not affiliated with U-M, you can call the Child Care Network at 975-1840, for help finding child care.

If your child is between 3-5 years old:

  • Contact the U-M Northwood Community Child Development Center (CDC) at 764-4557, 1000 McIntyre, between 8:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. CDC offers part-time child care two to five mornings or afternoons per week.
  • You can also contact the CDC Office (764-4557) at 1000 McIntyre to find out if your child qualifies for a free preschool program, either at CDC or in the Ann Arbor Public Schools.

For children who are older than 5 years of age:

  • You can take a late afternoon English class at the same time your school-aged child attends the Pre-Kindergarten Thru First Grade class or the Afterschool English Workshop for Kids or Teens.
  • Ask your child's school or the Ann Arbor Public School's Office (994-2200), 2555 S. State Street, about after school programs they have.

Many of the programs listed above are quite popular and have limited spaces. Therefore, contact them as soon as possible. If the program you want is full, ask about a waiting list. When a space opens up, sometimes many people on the waiting list are called before the space is filled. Good luck! We hope you find a good program for your child while you are taking classes in the English Language Program.

Parking
If you live in Northwood (i.e., you are a resident and you have a parking permit), you can park in any lot.

If you do not live in Northwood Community Apartments, (i.e. you are considered a "Non-Resident"), you can park:

  • In the evening after 6:00pm, in the "Orange" parking lot at the corner of McIntyre and Hubbard Streets for free.

OR

  • You can buy a monthly parking permit, which would allow you to park in
    • lot #NW 46 (near the Community Center) or in
    • Lot #NW12 (near 1588 Cram Circle).

This monthly permit will cost between $2-13 depending on how many days per week you will attend class. YOU CAN BUY THIS PERMIT AT THE COMMUNITY CENTER INFORMATION DESK ON OR AFTER YOUR FIRST DAY OF CLASS. Please bring your car license plate number and your receipt of payment for classes. NOTE: This permit will only be valid for one month. You will need to buy a new permit each month that you attend classes. You may buy all of your monthly parking permits for one semester together (instead of buying one every month). However, you must remember to change the permit on your car when the month changes. You will have to pay for a new permit if you lose any.

Please park as described above. If you do not, you may get a parking ticket. Thank you for your cooperation.

Contact the Community Center staff at 764-9998 or e-mail us at northwood@umich.edu with any questions.
