Other
Short-Term Housing Options
The University of Michigan draws
academic and business visitors from all across the world, some of whom
come for a relatively short period. If you are coming to campus for longer
than a standard hotel stay, but less than the length of most on- or off-campus
leases, you may need short-term housing.
Unfortunately, it is often difficult to secure affordable short-term
housing in the Ann Arbor area. Landlords usually hold tenants to a 12-month
lease and hotels can be expensive over long periods of time. The University
offers therefore offers Northwood Community
Apartments Short-Term Housing on North Campus.
The following lists resources and suggestions for campus-area short-term
accommodations.
Conference
Services
University Housing’s Conference Services manages several short-term
housing options for campus visitors staying for a week through several
months. Some of the current options are:
Faculty
& Staff Housing Referral Listings
A listing of residences available for rent from faculty and staff members
is available for viewing by other faculty and staff members, including
those coming from other U.S. campuses or campuses abroad. These are primary
residences of faculty and staff, leased for variable lengths of time while
they are away from Ann Arbor. To view the listings you will need to complete
the Eligibility Form. You will receive an email message from the Housing
Information Office within 1-2 business days notifying you of your eligibility
status. If your eligibility is confirmed, you will receive a user name
and password, which will allow you to login and gain access to all functions
of the listing.
Off-Campus
Housing Listings
You can search ads for available off-campus housing leased by area landlords.
Some landlords may be willing to negotiate a short lease term on a case-by-case
basis, depending on their rental availability.
Student Sublet Listings
Subletting can be an inexpensive alternative to signing a lease. You may
search advertisements for sublets that students post throughout the year.
You are most likely to find a sublet for the winter term, (January-April)
when many students go abroad, or during the summer (May-August) when students
leave campus. Many students find sublet information through the Michigan
Daily, the Ann Arbor News (available
through MLive) U-M Marketplace
(a UM login is required), or TheDiag.
The Off-Campus
Housing sponsored sublet listings are only available to U-M community
members.
Northwood
Community Apartments Sublets
If you are a guest, current or visiting student or faculty staff member
at UM during the summer, you may sublet an apartment from a current contract
holder. Residents may sublet their apartments between May 1st - August
31st. You can view current Sublet Listings
or find out more about Northwood Community Apartments.
Inter-Cooperative
Council (ICC) Co-ops
Nineteen ICC co-ops, housing graduate and undergraduate students, are
located on or near the University's North and Central Campuses. Each resident
member contributes 4-6 hours of work a week to manage the house. Co-ops
range in size from 12-85 members and have rooms which accommodate 1-3
people each. 8 month and 4 month contracts are available.
