Policies & Procedures

In support of the ResComp Conditions of Use, we maintain a number of procedures designed to make the network a hospitable environment for the students, faculty, and staff who use the network for work, study and play. The following areas encompass the vast majority of risks to the network:

Compromised Machines

A machine infected with a virus, worm, trojan or other malware can wreak havoc on the shared network resources in a Residence Hall. When a compromised machine is discovered, access to the network is immediately disabled. The registered user of that machine will receive an email with instructions on how to remediate the infection in order to have his/her network access restored. Learn more about compromised machines.

Unauthorized Routers or Access Points

Wired routers are permitted in University Housing if they are properly registered with ResComp. Wireless routers or access points are not allowed on the ResNet network as they interfere with network resources. Wireless routers may be used as a wired router and are allowed on the network if properly registered. Wireless routers are also permitted in buildings without pervasive wireless. Learn more about router violations.

Other Policy Violations

Violations of the ResComp Conditions of Use not specified above are still subject to sanctions including, but not limited to, suspension or termination of ResNet network access and possible legal action.

Since violations can be idiosyncratic, the procedures taken for the handling of such violations may vary. Factors in determining the path to an optimal resolution may include assessing whether the violation was intentional or unintentional, whether the individual has committed prior offenses, and what group is best able to assist in resolving the situation (e.g. ResComp Help Desk, ResComp CVC, User Advocate, HSCRP, etc.) Please contact the ResComp Help Desk at 734.647.1133 for more information.
