East Quad is a co-ed residence hall located on Central Campus — close to South University shops and restaurants and many University buildings including the Schools of Business, Education and Social Work.
The East Quad dining hall is known for its vegetarian and vegan offerings. The Halfway Lounge is a venue for musical performances, open mic nights, poetry readings and other EQ community events.
East Quad will be closed for renovations beginning Fall 2012. It is part of the Residential Life Initiatives, a comprehensive, multi-year plan to revitalize and renovate student housing at U-M.
History
East Quad was completed in two phases: the north half was built in 1941 while the south half was built in 1948. Although East Quad was originally an all-male residence hall, it has been co-educational since 1952. Over the years, East Quad has been home to the Military Intelligence Department, Army, Air Force and Army Engineers. During World War II, East Quad was used to train soldiers in the Japanese language and in weather observation.
