History and
Biographies
The children
of Helen Handy Newberry of Detroit gave the University $75,000 in the
summer of 1913 in order to build a women's residence hall near Kelsey
Museum. Helen Newberry is the oldest all-female hall on campus, which
opened in 1915. The money was given with the understanding that the property
would belong to the Christian Students Association. The SCA sold Newberry
to the University for $25,000 in 1925.
