Introduction

First-Year Experience Advisor works in Mary Markley Hall and is responsible for linking residents, residence staff, and student organizations to support resources and programs which serve to ensure first-year student success. FYE Advisor implements programs with a targeted goal of ensuring student success in the areas of student involvement, academics, learning, social adjustment, life skills, wellness, and resource connection.

FYE Advisor is directly supervised by the Hall Director. In order to succeed in this role, forming active collaborations and partnerships with both students and Residence Staff, are essential.

Time Commitment
30 hours per week (including five regular office hours per week in an assigned office and Residence Staff, FYE Student Steering Committee, and supervision meetings).

Responsibilities

    • Implement training that empowers Residence Staff with methods to target the developmental needs and enhance the residential experience of first-year students and creates ownership of the program amongst the Residence Staff.
    • Collaborate with University Housing offices and other constituent groups to develop relationships which achieve FYE program goals and provide the support needed for these collaborations to succeed.
    • Manage room and vehicle reservations, obtain supplies and refreshments, and complete other tasks which are needed to successfully implement defined FYE programmatic outcomes.
    • Assess the needs of first-year students in Markley Hall to ensure these needs are being met by the FYE program.
    • Organize and manage, with the assistance of a committee of Resident Advisors signature FYE programs
    • Flexibility to accompany students on programs, both on and off campus, typically occurring on evenings and weekends.
    • Develop programs which create a viable alternative for students who wish to abstain from the alcohol and party culture.
    • Knowledgeable of the FYE Mission and Goals and works to assess first year student needs in order to coordinate and/or facilitate community building activities
    • Plan and implement programs throughout the year in specific outcome areas defined in the FYE Mission and Goals and through needs assessment with such groups as residents, Resident Directors, and Residence Staff.
    • Develop publicity and a marketing brand which attracts students to and creates awareness of the FYE program.
    • Referring students to resources and services to help them to successfully transition into the University community.
    • Compile a monthly report of activities, programs, and referrals.
    • Maintain an accurate record of how the FYE budget is utilized.
    • Maintain a bulletin board regularly which advertises programs and support resources that the FYE program offers.
    • Fulfill all of the advising, counseling, programming and administrative responsibilities outlined in the Resident Advisor job description.

    Special Qualifications
    Persons with previous experience on Residence Staff with demonstrated strong programming, leadership, and assessment skills and an ability achieve successful outcomes in an autonomous environment will receive priority. All qualified applicants, however, will receive consideration. Must have a driving record which qualifies you to drive University vehicles and you must be able to safely operate a 15 passenger van.

    Compensation
    100% room (single room) and board waiver, $2,000 stipend, basic cable, and the use of a mini-fridge for the academic year.
