Eligibility Requirements for ResStaff Applicants
The following eligibility requirements apply to applicants for all Residence Education Staff positions, except where noted. These requirements must be satisfied at the time of application or by the end of Winter Term 2008, as noted below. Failure to establish any requirement will result in the loss of any offered position.

Undergraduate applicants

  • Completion of at least 3 terms of full time enrollment on a college or university campus (not including summers)
  • Completion of 36 credit hours of course work completed on a college or university campus (no advanced placement credits)
  • Minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5, without rounding, at the end of Winter 2008 terms.

Graduate and Graduate Level Professional Degree applicants

  • Minimum cumulative GPA of 5.0 on an 8.0 scale, or 5.5 on a 9.0 scale (both without rounding). This requirement must be met both at the end of Winter 2008 term.

Note to All Applicants:

Candidates who fail to meet the minimum GPA requirements indicated above will not be permitted to accept offered positions.

Courses selected as pass/fail or credit/no credit will be counted only towards meeting the 36 credit hour requirement; they will have no impact on GPA.

Housing Student Conflict Resolution records will also be checked to determine if an applicant is eligible to be hired for a staff position.

It is the responsibility of the applicant to notify Housing Administration, regarding any special circumstances (e.g., incompletes, grade changes, etc.) that may influence final GPA.

Employment
Once employed by Residence Education, all staff members will be expected to uphold certain standards to ensure their academic success and successful Residence Staff performance.

Employment Period
Exact dates of employment are outlined in the Letter of Appointment (LOA) signed by each residence staff appointee at the time of offer.

Time Commitments

  • Meetings
Weekly meetings (day TBD by ResStaff), 6:00 - 8:00 PM are reserved for regularly-scheduled staff meetings. Staff members are required to be available and should make no academic or other commitments that would conflict with position responsibilities. Pre-scheduled examinations are excused absences, but notification must be given to supervisor.
  • Accessibility and Time Away
To ensure accessibility to residents, Residence Staff members will be required to restrict time spent away from the building. ResStaff are allowed to be away from the hall a maximum of 3 days per month and must have all absences pre-approved by the supervisor. Requests for additional time off will be evaluated on an individual basis.
  • Residence Education will honor all academic holidays (Memorial Day and Independence Day), and these days will not count as vacation days for ResStaff. However, as the residence hall remains open, duty coverage is required during these holidays, and staff may be required to remain on campus if selected to cover duty on these days.
  • Academic Enrollment
All Spring/Summer staff must be registered for at least 1 credit hour at the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor campus. Staff are not required to be enrolled both semesters, and the course load requirement may be met in either the Spring or Summer semester.
  • Workloads
The ResStaff position is a 20 hour/week commitment during the semester in which you are enolled. For the semester in which you are not enrolled, you will be required to work 30 hours/week. In order to ensure that each Resident Staff member has sufficient time to devote to their position, academics, and personal outside interests, restrictions are placed on time invested in employment opportunities outside of the ResStaff position. ResStaff members are limited to 10 hours/week of additional employment outside of the ResStaff position. The supervising HD should be informed of all work commitments, and should be apprised of changes in this commitment level.

The following acts, if committed by a Residence Staff member, will warrant consideration for immediate dismissal from the position and cancellation of all benefits of employment:

  • Violation of university policy, Community Living Standards Guidelines, local ordinances, state statutes or federal laws.
  • Losing master keys/misuse of duty staff keys (giving keys to someone else/unlawful entry).
  • Physical assault.
  • Missing duty or missing training without permission (unexcused absences).
    Misuse of University property.
  • Violation of serious offenses as outlined in the Community Living Handbook (alcohol, illegal drugs).
  • Failure to advise the supervisor of an overnight absence from the hall or absence from campus.
  • Refusal to comply with a reasonable request made by the supervisor, in line with expectations expressed or implied in the position description.
  • Acts of negligence, which cause reasonable doubt of satisfactory job performance.
  • Behavior which can reasonably be considered damaging to the ability of Residence Education, Facilities, and Dining Services to meet its contractual responsibilities.
  • Failure to comply with any of the conditions listed in this document or the position description.

We are dedicated to:

  • Effectively serving and working with residence hall students, staff and faculty of diverse backgrounds and viewpoints
  • Encouraging students to take responsibility and challenge themselves to grow, and support each other’s growth
  • Providing a safe environment – one that promotes both physical and emotional well-being
  • Providing linkage and access to services both within and beyond Housing
  • Supporting the academic and educational mission of the University by providing opportunities for learning within and beyond the classroom – bringing learning into the living environment
  • Working toward a common vision and aspirations for the quality of life of the residence hall community
