facilities and FIX-IT: Cleaning Standards

Residence Hall Cleaning StandardsPlease do your part to keep your hall clean!
To help maintain a healthy and comfortable residence hall environment, Facilities staff will clean and maintain the building, including offices, corridors, community bathrooms, lounges and other common areas.

The responsibilities of Facilities include the following:

  • Cleaning and disinfecting community bathrooms and fixtures daily (Monday-Friday)

  • Surface cleaning community bathrooms on weekends

  • Cleaning and disinfecting showers at least twice weekly

  • Removing all trash and recycled material daily

  • Vacuuming hallway corridors three times weekly

  • Repairing and maintaining building system components

  • Pest control (see Pests)

Please do your part to keep your hall clean! Be aware that unnecessary trashing or vandalism adds to the workload of Facilities staff, interfering with their ability to meet the standard service levels listed above.

Residents are responsible for maintaining their rooms at a level of cleanliness that discourages pests, mold, bacterial growth and other health and safety hazards. This responsibility extends to any non-community bathroom or other rooms that are not open to the general resident community (e.g. a Baits suite or Oxford apartments).

Here’s how you can contribute to a clean and healthy residence hall environment:

  • Dispose of trash only in designated areas. Be sure everything goes in the containers—not around them.

  • Sort recyclable items by following the instructions on the poster in your waste/recycling area.

  • Clean up after yourself. If you become ill or otherwise create a mess, please clean it up yourself. There are student custodial closets with equipment for you to use.

  • Put what you sweep from your room in the trash can (not the corridor outside your door).

  • Clean your room (frequency is up to you and your roommate(s)).

  • If a hallmate is abusing the facilities, consider approaching him or her about the behavior. If you are uncomfortable doing it directly, contact your RA or Coordinator of Residence Education.

  • Properly dispose of all sharps (syringes and blood-testing lancets). For information about our sharps collection program, please refer to the Sharps Program section in this web site, or contact your Coordinator of Residence Education.

  • Make use of the vacuum cleaners, cleaning supplies, brooms and dust pans available at the front desk or in the student custodial closets.-Top-
