Sharps Program
A Guide for Residents of University Housing
What is the Sharps Program?
In order to protect other residents and our staff from possible injury from used hypodermic needles or blood test lancets (collectively referred to as sharps throughout the rest of this document) Housing has established a “Sharps Program”. The “Sharps Program” is a method for safely disposing of used sharps. These items represent a potential threat to others as well as the environment. We are therefore required to separate sharps from normal trash and dispose of them in a safe manner. Each residence hall has a disposal site that is periodically emptied by University Hazardous Waste personnel.
How do I dispose of sharps?
You can obtain re-useable sharps collection envelopes from the Community Center of each Residence Hall, which will hold approximately 10 sharps. The sharps collection envelopes will not fit in the collection containers, and therefore, should be opened so that the sharps flow directly from the envelope into the collection containers. Walking with unrestricted sharps poses a danger to you as well as others due to the potential for needle stick injuries.
Where are the collection containers located?
