SecurityHousing Security is a division of University Housing and the Department of Public Safety. Jointly employed, managed and directed, Housing Security is dedicated to providing a safe and comfortable environment for our residents to enjoy and call home.

University Housing residence halls have security coverage 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. One officer is assigned to each building each night from 9:00 p.m. through 7:00 a.m. Between 7:00 a.m. and 9:00 p.m., there are officers on patrol who will respond to any of our buildings should our dispatch center receive a request for assistance.

Contacting Housing Security
Call 911 from any University telephone for emergencies in progress.

Call 3-1131 from any University telephone for non-emergency situations. If you are outside of the University, call (734) 763-1131.

Both numbers ring into the Department of Public Safety's communications center. The dispatcher will obtain all necessary information and will then dispatch an officer. Our communications system also allows direct radio communication with University Police officers. If necessary, a police officer will be dispatched to the scene, along with a Housing Officer.

Calling 911 from any phone on the University of Michigan campus connects to the University of Michigan Department of Public Safety.

There are also blue topped emergency telephones all over campus, including near residence halls. Lifting the receiver automatically places a direct call to D.P.S. Help is immediately dispatched for emergency calls. Non-emergency calls for assistance are handled in the order they are received.

When Should I Call Security?

  • Any time a resident observes someone behaving in a suspicious manner or feels that his/her or another person's safety is in jeopardy
  • If you are the victim of a crime or observe a crime being committed
  • If you are injured and require medical attention
  • Any other situation that you deem to be an emergency. Even if it seems inappropriate to contact Security, officers can, at the very least, direct you to the correct course of action.
