Frequently
Asked Lockset Questions
These are frequently asked questions and answers for residents
in halls where electronic locksets are installed.
- What doors
are affected?
All student room doors and bathrooms/shower rooms (except any bathrooms
open for the public).
- Can I gain
access by only using my PIN number or only using my card?
No, the system is designed for maximum security. Therefore both your
individual PIN and card must be used.
- Can I change
my PIN number?
Yes, there is a kiosk centrally located in each residence hall. Using
the kiosk you can select your own 4 digit PIN. It is a good idea to
choose a number that is easy to remember. Your original PIN is the last
four digits of your social security number, or less frequently, your
UMID. Remember, do not write the number down or share it with anyone.
- What do
I do if I lock myself out of my room or my keycard is lost or stolen?
Go to the Front Desk for a temporary keycard in the case of a lock out
or a replacement keycard for lost keycards. If it is after Front Desk
hours, contact an RA or security for access.
- Can I unlock
my door so that I do not get locked out when I go across the hall or
to another room?
No, the door will automatically lock when shut.
- What happens
if the power goes out?
Your lock is battery operated.
- What happens
if the battery in my lock dies? How long do the batteries last?
The batteries are designed to last approximately 2 years. Each battery
will be checked twice a year. If a battery does die during the year,
contact your Front Desk for proper procedures. If it is after hours,
contact your RA or the RA on duty and or security. They will re-charge
the battery allowing you access and possibly replace the battery.
- After inserting
my card and entering my PIN number, my lock gave me a green light but
when I depressed the lever the door did not open. What's wrong?
There may be a problem with the lock itself. Contact FIX-IT
to put in a request. If it is after hours, contact security. If you
put the card in and get a red light, then there may be a problem
with the card. Take the card to the front desk.
