Recycling Tips

At U of M, it’s easy to recycle!

University Housing and Waste Management Services co-sponsor the Residence Hall Recycling Program which allows residents to recycle by using the blue recycling tote in their room. Students are responsible for bringing trash and recyclables to the nearest Waste/Recycling Closet (or to outside collection sites for some buildings). Due to the large volumes of trash and recyclables, there are specific instructions for move-in and move-out.

Always remember to buy recycled items whenever possible, including 100% post-consumer recycled content and non-chlorine-bleached paper, which is available at most bookstores and office supply stores. Get a re-usable mug and water bottle to avoid throwing away another cup or bottle each time you have another drink.

Paper products that can be recycled:

  • corrugated cardboard
  • envelopes
  • junk mail
  • newspapers and magazines (including glossy paper)
  • notebook paper
  • office paper
  • paper bags
  • paperback books
  • paperboard (e.g. cereal boxes) and boxboard

Containers that can be recycled:

  • aluminum or steel cans
  • ceramics
  • glass bottles
  • juice boxes
  • laundry detergent bottles
  • metals
  • milk cartons
  • plastic bottles labeled #1 or #2
  • water bottles

  • ink and toner cartridges: take them to your front desk

  • sharps: contact your RA
  • soft drink cans and bottles: take them to a party store or market to redeem the 10 cent deposit
